Knees Again

Twenty weeks after a knee reconstruction or a replacement, aimed at stairs, floors and hills rather than at a discharge form.

Surgeons get you back to walking. This block is about everything after walking, and it is the longest thing I run because knees are not in a hurry.

We spend the first six weeks on range, single-leg control and a great deal of tedious step work, measured every fortnight so you can see it moving. Weeks seven to fourteen load the leg properly, which is the part most rehabilitation stops short of. The last six weeks are hills, floors and carrying things down stairs, because that is what people are actually frightened of.

I work alongside your physical therapist wherever there is one, and I will ask for their notes before we start.
